What we do
Our vision is to help build healthy lives, communities, and nations. We believe that health isn’t just the absence of disease, but the presence of wellness – living a full and abundant life (John 10:10!) We help promote health through a variety of expressions outlined below.
Our role is to lead the campus in Port Moresby that helps support the work of the ship, provides vocational training for young people, and accommodates the dental semi-trailer that will serve in schools across Port Moresby.
Medical Ship
The YWAM Medical Ship, MV YWAM PNG, serves remote communities with healthcare and training. The ship is equipped with a dentistry clinic, day procedure unit, laboratory and small boats that transport primary healthcare, optometry, and health education teams to remote villages.
Training – skills, faith and character
In Port Moresby alone, over 90% of young people are unemployed. With only 0.7% of the population accessing university education, there is an urgent need to provide accessible training to young people. In partnership with our Australian Registered Training Organisation, we deliver vocational training in the areas of hospitality, healthcare and management from our campus in Port Moresby. Each training program combines skills training with character & faith development and volunteer opportunities; aiming to help disciple young people to have integrity, love and passion for their vocation and community, and a deep love for God!
Dental Semi-Trailer
Did you know that PNG has the highest rate of oral cancer in the world? And that there is only 1 dentist for every 100,000 people in PNG? I still remember wincing when I heard a story about a young man who resorted to knocking out his own tooth with a rock due to an excruciating toothache. If you’ve even had a toothache – I’m sure you can relate to the desperation this man must have felt. The dental semi-trailer is equipped with 3 dental chairs, x-ray and sterilisation facilities and is ready to ship up to Port Moresby to work in 100+ primary and secondary schools throughout the district. It will be housed and serviced from our campus in Port Moresby.
